Abstract

Kazinczy Ferenc’s treatise, Orthologist and Neologist in our own and other nations has become one of the most emblematic texts in the history of the Hungarian language renewal. For a long time, literary scholarship relied on the version published in the Tudományos Gyűjtemény in November 1819, and thus, in a peculiar way, the only published version of the treatise determined the narrative for decades. However, the exploration of Kazinczy’s manuscript legacy has revealed roughly thirty draft fragments of the treatise. A special method is required for the critical edition of this group of manuscripts. Using a system of text fields reveals the various degrees of interweaving between these text sources on a much smaller scale than the text itself, in a far more transparent and complex manner. All this sheds light on the various thematic alterations and intertextual connections, and makes it possible to reconstruct further versions of the treatise that would otherwise remain unnoticed. Moreover, examining the textual variants not only rewrites the origins of the Orthologist and Neologist in our own and other nations, but also revises several long-held, fundamental theses about the history of Hungarian language renewal. This alters our entrenched understanding of the linguistic and literary processes of the period.
