Abstract

A zúzmaráz ~ zúzmara szót az ismeretlen eredetű zúz- ’dér, fagy’ és a szláv eredetű -maráz ’fagy’ tautologikus összetételének tartja a magyar etimológiai szakirodalom. A történeti, etimológiai és nyelvjárási szótárak releváns szócikkeiben idézett adatok összegyűjtése, ellenőrzése és elemzése után írásomban amellett érvelek, hogy ez nem az említett szavakból álló összetétel, hanem egy szláv eredetű szó a magyarban. | The Hungarian word zúzmaráz ~ zúzmara ‘rime ice’ is considered by the Hungarian ety-mological literature to be a tautological compound of the words zúz­ ‘soft rime, frost’ of unknown origin and ­maráz ‘frost’ of Slavic origin. After collecting, checking, and analysing all words listed in the relevant entries of Hungarian historical, etymological, and dialectological dictionaries, this paper argues that zúzmaráz ~ zúzmara is not a compound of said words but a word of Slavic origin (*izmrazъ) in Hungarian.
