Abstract

Language acquisition is characterized by substantial individual variation even among typically developing children. Delayed or atypical language development, however, is often associated with longterm disadvantages, underscoring the need for early screening and identification of language difficulties. The aim of this study was to adapt the Speech and Language Assessment Scale (SLAS) into Hungarian (SLAS-HU), and to evaluate its psychometric properties, thus contributing to the repertoire of Hungarian parent-report instruments for the assessment of children’s language and communication skills. This research comprised two studies involving parents of 4- to 5-year-old children. The first study focused on the translation, cultural adaptation, and pilot testing of the SLAS-HU to evaluate its feasibility and reliability. The second study examined the psychometric properties of the SLAS-HU, including its factor structure, reliability, and validity, based on concurrent analyses of parental and expert ratings. In the first study, after its Hungarian translation, mothers of 53 children (56.6% boys; mean age = 4.99 years, SD = 0.38) completed the SLAS-HU online. Respondents did not report substantive problems with the items, and the questionnaire showed high internal consistency. The second study included mothers of 113 children (52.2% boys; mean age = 5.04 years, SD = 0.37), as well as the children’s kindergarten teachers (n = 100) or speech-language therapists (n = 13), all of whom completed a paper-and-pencil test battery. Convergent validity was assessed by examining associations with the Children’s Communication Checklist–2 (based on parent reports) and the Communication domain of the Developmental Questionnaire (based on expert reports). Exploratory factor analysis indicated a unidimensional structure for the SLAS-HU, with high internal consistency. A modest correlation was observed between parental and expert scores (Spearman’s rho = .41). Mothers tended to provide higher ratings of their children’s speech and language abilities compared to peers than did the experts. Motherreported SLAS-HU scores were significantly lower for children with an existing language delay and were slightly lower for boys as well. Weak to moderate correlations were also observed between motherreported SLAS-HU scores and the subscales of other parental and expert measures. The strongest associations emerged with scales assessing expressive speech and speech comprehension. The SLAS-HU appears to be a promising instrument for empirical research on speech and communication competence and for the early identification of risks in language development. The findings contribute to the development and application of Hungarian parent-report questionnaires for the assessment of language development.
