Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the tumbling method on sand-cast metal parts. The first phase of the research was to design and construct a laboratory-scale tumbling mill, make samples for the measuring instruments available and to construct a coal-powered furnace that can be used in the making of the metal samples. After the design and construction of the necessary hardware, we conducted the experiment, took the necessary measurements and processed our data: this consisted of measuring the surface roughness of the metal samples before, during and after a complete tumbling cycle, then processing the resulting data. The experiment allows us to determine the optimal tumbling parameters such as the ideal tumbling medial size, the optimal speed of revolution of the tumbling drum and the smallest surface rough ness achievable via the tumbling method. The experiment also allows us to find a correlation between the tumbling time and the change in surface roughness, which makes it possible to determine the optimal time frame in which the method is the most effective.
