Abstract

In 2007 an article was published on the subject of Irish Studies in Hungary, which assessed the critical reception of Irish literature by Hungarian scholars up to 2006. That article abounds in the names of Joyce, Yeats, Beckett and Brian Friel, while it cites only a few papers which analyze Irish literary works by women. To a measure, the present essay is a sequel to that article, finding that nearly two decades later the balance has fortunately changed since many Irish women authors’ works have become the subject of Hungarian scholarship in the meantime. For the purpose of this essay, I have selected only around a dozen critical inquiries into the respective achievements of Irish women playwrights, given the richness of the material. The authors covered range from eighteenthcentury Frances Sheridan to writers who began their career in the theatre world of the twenty-first century, for example Lucy Caldwell in Northern Ireland. This essay surveys monographs, articles and essays using a comparative approach where appropriate and attempts to offer a sound introduction to the selected critical texts.
