Abstract

This paper provides an overview of marginal phonemes based on examples mainly from Uralic languages. It explores the reasons why it is not possible to give an exact definition of the term marginal phoneme. It also examines how marginal phonemes may be characterised from the point of view of the phoneme system, their relationship to allophonic phenomena, their connection to their phonological environments, and the possible processes through which they emerge. These conditions can serve as standpoints for the typologisation of marginal phonemes. Finally, some hypothetical generalisations on marginal phonemes are provided.
