Abstract

José Ortega y Gasset is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in 20th-century European philosophy. In Hungary–similar to most countries–he is best known for La rebelión de las masas (The revolt of the masses), first published in 1930 in a book format and translated into Hungarian within a few years. The present paper has a dual aim. First, it seeks to familiarise the reader with Ortega y Gasset’s main concepts of law, their place within his broader philosophical thought and philosophy of history, by engaging with his works beyond La rebelión de las masas and by presenting relevant secondary literature in the field. Second, it briefly outlines the hypothesis that Ortega y Gasset’s significance for the philosophy of law and state does not lie primarily in the author’s writings themselves, but rather in their enduring and profound influence.
