Abstract
In this paper I identify resultative adverbs such as foltmentesen ‘spotlessly’ in Hungarian as a subclass of low adverbial adjuncts and propose a syntactic analysis of these adverbs. I show that these resultative adverbs are similar to resultatives carrying sublative case such as tisztára ‘lit. onto clean’ in tisztára törli az asztalt ‘wipe the table clean’ in that they can both contribute result states to event descriptions, but they are also different with respect to how they interact with inner aspect in the event domain of the sentence. I argue that resultatives like tisztára ‘lit. onto clean’ create telic event descriptions in the specifier of the inner aspectual functional projection AspP below vP, as proposed by Kardos & Farkas (2022), whereas resultative adverbs like foltmentesen ‘spotlessly’ typically modify such descriptions by adjoining to AspP. The latter thus contrast with other low adverbials including manner adverbs, which adjoin to vP. Hungarian resultative adverbs also seem to contrast with their English counterparts like colorfully since the latter only modify result states, as argued by Geuder (2000) and Jung & Choi (2023).
