Abstract

In this study, the court aspects of the career of Bishop Ferenc Zichy (1700–1783) of Győr will be examined, namely his personal presence in the imperial city and his involvement in court representation. These constitute a chapter of his life that is still partly unknown and partly, due to the lack of a broader historical context, only known at the data level. In this study, the author will address both Zichy’s years as bishop of Győr (1744–1783) and the period preceding them, utilising this comprehensive approach to trace the arc of Ferenc Zichy’s academic pursuits at the University of Vienna and his experiences as a young man of the court and the realm of power representation. An analysis of his early career, including his inaugural Mass at court in 1724, will be conducted, followed by an examination of the stagnation of his career towards the end of Emperor Charles VI’s reign and his unsuccessful attempts to secure the Bishopric of Nitra. The second half of the study provides insight into Ferenc Zichy’s involvement in the ceremonial world of the Viennese court as a bishop and the significance of this, as well as the circumstances surrounding his 1774 Golden Jubilee, which marked the pinnacle of his career as a bishop and his admission to the Order of St Stephen.
