Abstract
The study examines the survival strategies of students from Hungary studying at early modern universities, with particular focus on scholarships, student work, and fundraising practices. It presents the functioning of the Wittenberg Cassai Foundation and other support systems that played a crucial role in enabling Hungarian students to pursue studies abroad. It also provides a detailed overview of scholarships in Tübingen and Greifswald, as well as the canteen system in Halle, which ensured minimal sustenance even for the poorest students. Based on the sources, it becomes clear that students were often compelled to take on work or engage in quasi-begging fundraising practices to finance their education. The study concludes that acquiring knowledge frequently involved enduring severe hardship, yet these sacrifices fundamentally contributed to the formation of the intellectual elite of the period.
