Abstract

Cultural and creative industries (CCIs) are attracting a growing international scholarship including several notable contributions from geographers. This article represents a modest contribution to the emerging and vibrant African scholarship surrounding the creative economy and CCIs. The aim is to unpack the composition and shifting content of the cultural economy and CCIs in a non-metropolitan space in the Global South. The study focuses on Mahikeng which is situated in South Africa’s North West province. Within the extant literature on CCIs this research is novel through applying a historical approach based on a longitudinal analysis of the cultural economy over a 50-year period and understanding the different influences shaping its shifting complexion. This historical perspective on CCIs is a contribution of the research and addresses a knowledge gap in that most existing CCI literature research is characterised by a bias towards present-mindedness. The overall historical evolution of CCIs in Mahikeng is a classic illustration of the rise and demise of a cultural economy cluster in a non-metropolitan space. This trajectory of change in the cultural economy and CCIs can only be understood in terms of the critical moments or junctures of political change which impacted the town.
