Abstract

This paper is an updated, enlarged version of an English paper (published in 2002), translated and enlarged by the author. The original article is somewhat adjusted in content to the theme of a research at Károli Gáspár University, on “Defending the family in spiritual and physical sense”. The paper discusses passages in the Catholic Epistles, in which expressions related to relationships in the family appear, using family imagery in a figurative sense. These relationships are primarily those between children and parents, and on occasion between „brothers and sisters”, as they are also „children” of their parents. The paper discusses the seven Catholic Epistles: James, 1Peter, Jude and 2Peter, and the three Johannine Epistles. The paper looks for answers to the following questions: To what kind of relationships in the family do these expressions refer? What may be the purpose of using family imagery in a figurative sense? What may we learn from this usage for the life of families today? The main thesis of the paper is that Early Christians used family imagery in order to promote a loveful, supporting relationship among members of the Christian congregations. Biblical writers on occasion called their addressees their “children”, but they also emphasised that the Christian congregation members are children of God, and thus also “brothers and sisters” of each other.
