Abstract
Different passages in the Holy Scriptures address the issues of divorce and marriage in different ways. In many cases, these differences stem from the contemporary context. Therefore, any text dealing with marriage and particularly divorce, must first be examined thoroughly within the context of the relevant historical period and specific circumstances. This study adheres strictly to this fundamental principle to ensure that Christian exegesis does not promote ideology rather than the message. This study aims to demonstrate that Jesus’ attitude towards the socially weaker and vulnerable was far ahead of his time. Through the theme of divorce, Jesus articulates a deeper message that still imposes obligations on us today within the normative sense of Christian ethics.
