Abstract

A total of 109 radio sermons delivered by Gyula Muraközy, a Reformed pastor in Budapest between 1932 and October 1944, have survived. These sermons frequently addressed themes such as family life, the home, relationships between parents and between parents and their children, and making a living. Our current research highlights and examines five of these sermons in greater detail. In summary, Gyula Muraközy’s radio sermons on the family demonstrate his belief in the importance of the family in a healthy human life. In his sermons, he addresses acute social issues and crises related to family life, such as rising divorce rates, domestic violence, livelihood issues (particularly the financial difficulties faced by young families and those with many children), abortion, and the trend towards having only one child. He does not shy away from criticising the existing political order on more than one occasion, setting the task of holding lawmakers and government leaders accountable and motivating them to the Church. While it is clear that Muraközy did not see the solution as being found in human methods alone, his sermons invariably conclude that the solution to family crises lies in placing individual and communal life under the rule of Christ. In this way, the laws of God’s kingdom begin to reign within the family and among its members, and their daily lives are defined by love, forgiveness, patience, acceptance, selflessness, self-sacrifice and trust. Although Muraközy’s linguistic devices, images and illustrations are outdated, his sermons are still relevant today. They provide valuable, actionable lessons for modern pastors and congregants seeking answers to the challenges of family life. His sermons are timeless thanks to his insight and awareness of social and political issues affecting people. They are also notable for his openness and courage in addressing these issues from the pulpit, his method of examining contemporary phenomena by drawing parallels with biblical characters, stories and behaviours, the logical structure of his sermons, his effective and purposeful reasoning, his Scripture-based, mission-oriented evangelical theology and his emphasis on the eternal and the one true solution.
