Abstract
This study examines whether domestic abuse can be justified on biblical or theological grounds. While this topic has primarily been examined from psychological, sociological and legal standpoints, I contend that a theological evaluation is equally indispensable. First, I provide a brief review of the main theoretical models and typologies of intimate partner violence. Then, I offer a biblical and theological analysis of key issues relevant to domestic abuse. These include the biblical understanding of authority and leadership, the theology of human dignity, verbal abuse, the sin of pride, and the concepts of forgiveness and repentance. Ultimately, I contend that domestic abuse cannot be legitimised on any biblical or theological basis. Ultimately, I conclude that domestic abuse is fundamentally incompatible with the biblical concepts of human dignity, love, and leadership. Consequently, Christian theology should not be used to justify or minimise abuse, but rather to recognise, expose and unequivocally reject it.
