Abstract
The aim of the present paper is to thoroughly exami ne the judicial background and development of Hungary’s planningDstatistical regions, including t he beginning and consequences of Hungary’s EU accession. The idea of Hungary’s transition to a re gional structure had a variety of forms at the begi nD ning. It was not immediately before Hungary’s EU ac cession, but much earlier that the idea of transiD tion to regions emerged, mainly in connection with the institutional changes in public administration and during the regional development boom. . Hungary’s planning statistical regions, which had v ery diverse economic parameters, went through several changes with extreme differences in develop ment in the eastern and western parts of the counD try. At the same time the capital city with one fif th of the country’s population (has) lived its own inD dependent life, outperforming the economic paramete rs of the newly made regions, increasing the gap. The aim of the present paper is to summarize, intro duce, and analyse the decadeDlong judicial procD esses and economic indicators using statutes and st atistical data.
