Abstract

The study is a summary of entries from a personal diary to be published in the near future . It is also a comparison of the diary entries with literary text s of the period from a special perspective. László Bártfay, the author of the diary, the representative of the Age of Reform that preceded the 1848 revolution was an important background figure, a literary patron and organiser as well as a critical obs erver of the political events of the period. As secretary to Count György Károlyi, he developed a wide network of social contacts from all over the country: the body of the text is abundant in references to government officials and civil ervants, manoria l employees, merchants and artists appearing with their wives and daughters in the diary. Bártfay describes their activities, carreer and opportunities for forming their individual walks of life. Besides, the entries are rich in female characters of diffe rent social status that allow the reader to learn about firm patterns of gender relationships widely spread in social practice but at the same time remaining hidden in legislation or public documentation. The entries reflect also on the phenomena of prosti tution and kept women of the city.
