Abstract

In translation and interpreting training, one of the most significant challenges is preparing the students for translating and interpreting modes of speaking in the source language that are understood as belonging to dialectal varieties of the given language. The students and the practicing translators themselves often face the question how to translate such elements: should they use the standard variety of the language, or should they try to find a target language equivalent for the particular dialectal elements or texts. The article is based on a survey conducted among translators and interpreters with Hungarian as their working language. The aim of the research was mapping the attitudes that the respondents formulate regarding Hungarian dialects, dialects in general and the standard language itself. I also wanted to pinpoint the strategies that are (voluntarily or involuntarily) applied in translating and interpreting such elements.
