Abstract

This article aims to explore traditions related to the person of Stefan Štiljanović in Serbian and Hungarian historical literature from the 16th century to the present. Štiljanović was revered as a saint in the Serbian orthodox Church, and was buried on Göntér, a hill in Baranya County near Siklós in Southern Hungary. Altaugh there are only a few surviving sources about the life of the army officer who appeared in the post-1526 anti-Turkish battles, a particularly rich set of traditions evolved around his figure after the 16th century. The Serbian narrative gradually taking shape by the 18th century initially served the interests and aspirations of the archdiocese in Karlóca / Sremski Karlovci; later, in an increasingly secularized form, it supported the aspirations of Serbian power over East Slavona and South Baranya. Bay today, works of church history and art history have critically re-evaluated the elements of the Štiljanović tradition; however, this motifs keep emerging in fiction and popular scientific literature, which shows that the Serbian saint and voivode has became an essential part of Serbian national identity and collective memory. In Hungarian historiography, there has been no similarly organic tradition; writings about Štiljanović before 1918 were mostly reactions to the evolving Serbian narrative. Later, between the two world wars, Štiljanović in Hungary played a role in the historical and political discourse which promited the concept of Saint Stephan's state and campaigned for terrotorial revision. After 1945, Štiljanović's figure completely disappeared from professional historiography in Hungary. In contrast to the above narratives, the collective memory of the residents of Siklós turned out to present yet another image. After 1921, the majority of local Serbians were forced to flee Southern Hungary and settled down in the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes; the historical remembrance of Siklós's local community thus suffered a serious break, reviving only after 1990- By today, the traditions related to Štiljanović seem to have parted ways with politics and have become vital element of community formation and identity building.
