Abstract
The regional differences in the development levels of Hungary in 1910 has already been examined by many – using recent interpretations of the term development. But it is also worth examining how contemporary geographers and statisticians thought about the concept of development. The only systematic map-based summary of the economic efforts of the dualist period (1867-1918) is published in the atlas edited by Aladár Illés Edvi and Albert Halász for the peace negotiations following the First World War. Based on the attempts already been made for the 1930s to process cartographic material and that way illustrate regional inequalities, we selected 18 of the 70 maps published in the atlas representing the situation in the 1910s. By aggregating the normalized values of these 18 indicators into a composite development index, our study has attempted to visualize differences in general development at the county level through the lens of contemporary scholars.
