Abstract
T he present article focuses on the foundation and early activity of the seminary known as the Armenian College (Collegium Armenum) in Lviv in 1664, during the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, from a churchhistorical and Armenological point of view. The methodology of the study is based on the critical reading of archival sources kept in the archives of Budapest, Yerevan, Rome, Venice and Vatican City, as well as on an analysis of previous and contemporary secondary literature. In addition, Archbishop Nikol Torosowicz’s (1603−1681) policies of ecclesiastical union and the relevant historical background, along with his controversial relations with the authorities of the Holy See, are also considered. Finally, it is concluded that the foundation of the Armenian (Ruthenian) College of Lviv is closely related to the birth of the Armenian Catholic (Uniate) Church and modern Armenology.
