Abstract
In the second third of the 18th century, when the Counter-Reformation was again in full force, the situation of the clergy became quite difficult. Unfortunately, there are not many records available from this period. One of the most valuable ones is the record by Dean Pál Komáromi, who visited the congregations in the Reformed Church County of Tata between 1736 and 1737. The pastors’ situation at that time was assessed from three perspectives: how congregations viewed their pastors, external conditions like pastors’ salaries and the condition of the buildings and how pastors viewed their congregations. All in all, external conditions seemed to cause the most difficult problems. Many congregations could not pay their pastors at all or on time. At the same time, spiritual problems within congregations and among pastors were rarely found.
