Abstract
Micro-credentials represent a dynamic and innovative approach to skill acquisition and lifelong learning, offering individuals the opportunity to acquire targeted skills and knowledge in a flexible and efficient manner. These credentials, also known as digital badges or nanodegrees, have gained prominence in recent years due to the rapidly evolving nature of the workforce and the increasing demand for continuous upskilling and reskilling. The European Union defines micro-credentials as the record of the learning outcomes that a learner has acquired following a small volume of learning. As they are yet in a very early development phase, their efficacy and efficiency in workers’ upskilling still need to be assessed and weighed against potential unintended consequences. While currently there is a lack of documented data demonstrating market need and their outcomes and benefits, cooperation between higher education providers, national institutions or regulators, and the industry is crucial for the successful implementation of micro-credentials and for ensuring that they are employability driven.
