Abstract

This article examines the possibility of designating females as a reflection of gender in the language of forced labor and labor camps in the Soviet Union: its nominative system, vocabulary and gender category. The aim of the work is to describe and explain how the presence of female people is manifested in the thieves' jargon (“blatnoi iazyk”), what assessments are attributed to women and in what semantic areas they are most common. These questions were investigated using examples of fiction and encyclopedic literature by analyzing the speech and, in general, communicative behavior of men and women in prison conditions by analyzing the means and contexts in which gender is constructed. The influence of social factors and the communicative environment of the GULAG camps on this process. The results show that the lack of exploration of «feminine» material is insufficient to obtain a complete semantic picture of the gender aspects of the camp language.
