Abstract

Az Apafi Mihály fejedelemségét jelentő három évtized az Erdélyi Fejedelemség hattyúdala, lassú térvesztésének időszaka volt. Ez természetesen erősen kihatott az ország gazdasági helyzetére és az elit reprezentációs lehetőségeire is. Az 1660-ban, II. Rákóczi György halálával végképpen véget ért erdélyi aranykorral együtt radikálisan csökkent azoknak a fejedelmi építkezéseknek a száma, amelyek Bethlen Gábor és a két Rákóczi György uralmát meghatározták.1 Ebben a korszakban az állam legfőbb mecénása a fejedelem lett, a reprezentáció legfőbb helyszíne pedig a fejedelmi udvar, ami a kultúra és a divat számára is irányadóvá vált, valamint a házassági piac, az információáramlás, a társadalmi tőke kiépítésének is a helyszíne volt. A fejedelmi udvarban látott minták, a fejedelmi építkezések példát adtak a gyakran változó összetételű erdélyi elit tagjainak a saját reprezentatív központjaik megépítésére. A nagyobb események a nemesi udvarházak számára is példaként szolgálhattak. | This paper examines the elite of the second half of the 17th century from the perspective of how the elite, rising into or holding power, attempted to represent their own real or perceived social status. In the first part of the paper, I define the elite and those who I consider to belong to its highest circle. These are the successive members of the princely council during the three decades of Mihály Apafi’s principality. In addition to identifying the members of the Princely Council, I also examine the economic situation of Transylvania during the period. The almost continuous wars of the years 1657 to 1661 ruined many buildings, among them residences of the aristocratic families were damaged. Many of the former elite disappeared, and many appeared as newcomers to the elite. They tried with varying success to create a representation appropriate for aristocracy. In this paper, I will discuss those whose activities show an attempt to create elements of such a representation. Initially, the careers of Dénes Bánffy and the members of the Bethlen family offer evidence of such an endeavour, but later on, newcomers to the elite also attempted to build some kind of aristocratic representation. By analyzing the possible elements of aristocratic representation, I will also examine whether these attempts have achieved their aim.
