Abstract

Nepomuki Szent Jánost talán még ma sem kell bemutatni az olvasónak: az egyik legismertebb egyházi személy, akinek a középkori eredetű lokális tisztelete példa nélküli intenzitással, már a kultusz hivatalos szentszéki jóváhagyását jóval megelőzően Európa-szerte elterjedt. A mártírnak ez a XVII. századtól felívelő és a XVIII. század első felében kiteljesedő tisztelete azonban sokkal tartalmasabb és izgalmasabb volt, mint amennyit a számos egyformának tűnő köztéri szobrot tekintve ma feltételezünk róla. A kötetben a kultusz terjedése gyorsaságának, sikerességének és időtállóságának lehetséges okairól olvashatnak, kiemelt figyelemmel a mártír életrajzainak változásaira, azok ugyanis kifejezett érzékenységgel mutatják a szent társadalmi megítélésének és szerepének állandóan formálódó, egyre gazdagodó módosulásait is. | St John of Nepomuk probably needs no introduction to the readers: he is one of the best-known ecclesiastical figures, whose local veneration, which originated in the Middle Ages, spread across Europe with unprecedented intensity long before the cult was officially approved by the Holy See. But this veneration, which grew from the 17th century throughout Europe, was much more substantial and exciting than we might suppose from the many similar public statues of him. The volume explores the possible reasons for the speed, success, and timelessness of the cult's spread, with particular attention to the changes in the martyr's biographies, which show with marked sensitivity the constantly evolving and enriching changes in the social perception and role of the saint.
