Abstract

This study explores the relationship between language and national identity in early Hungarian literary thought, with a focus on the 16th and 17th centuries. It demonstrates that the idea encapsulated in the phrase “A nation lives through its language.” has deep historical roots, even if not always expressed in this exact form. Drawing on a wide range of sources – including grammarians, translators, and religious authors – the paper highlights how the cultivation of the vernacular became a central element of cultural and intellectual development. Hungarian authors frequently emphasized both the perceived shortcomings and the potential richness of their language, advocating its refinement in line with other European vernaculars. The study also shows that the promotion of Hungarian was closely tied to broader goals: expanding access to knowledge, strengthening national consciousness, and fostering unity across a politically fragmented country. Ultimately, the development of the national language is presented as a key factor in the emergence of early modern Hungarian identity.
