Abstract

A tanulmányban a tót népnév eredetét vizsgálom. A teut- tövű szavak Kelet-Pannóniában a római tartomány lakosságának szókészletéhez tartoztak. Aquincum territóriumán a Kr. u. 2–3. században június 11-én minden évben ünnepséget tartottak az uralkodó császár tiszteletére, és erről Iuppiter Teutanusnak oltárfeliratot készítettek; ezekből 20 felirat fennmaradt. A dátum az a nap lehetett, amikor Pannóniában bevezették a polgári igazgatást. Három Teut- kezdetű helységnév is ismert a tartományban (Teutoburgium, mons Teutanus, vicus Teuto). A tartomány lakossága az 5. századi első felében a hunok elől Délnyugat-Pannóniába menekült, arra a vidékre, amelyet a magyar középkorban Tótország-nak neveztek. Ezek az adatok magyarázhatják a tót népnév kialakulását. | In this study I examine the origin of the ethnonym tót ‘Slovak’. Ethnonyms with the root teut- belonged to the word stock of the people living in the Roman province of Eastern Pannonia. Celebrations were held every second year on the 11th of June in the territory of Aquincum, to honour the just reigning Imperator. On that occasion, they prepared epitaphs for altars. Twenty such epitaphs are still in existence. The 11th of June could be a celebrated day when civilian administration was introduced in Pannonia. Three place­names beginning with the sequence teut(Teutonburgium, mons Teutanus, vicus Teuto) are known in the province. In the 5th century AD, the inhabitans of the prov-ince fled from the Huns into Southwestern Pannonia, namely into the countryside which was named Tótország ‘the country of the Tots’ by the Hungarians in the Middle Ages. These data can help to clarify the etymology of the ethnonym tót.
