Abstract

A scholar of distinction, Šaykh Bahāʼ al-Dīn Muḥammad al-‘Āmilī (Shaykh Bahāʼī, 1547–1621) belongs to those few Safavid intellectuals whose likeness, literary activity, and spiritual stature simultaneously found their way to and reflected by the visual arts already during their lifetime and continue to be immortalised by them until the present day. The list of such people is short: Mīr Dāmād and Mullā Ṣadrā, to name just two contemporaries, do appear in art somewhat later than their own lifetime, but their visualisation is limited, compared to Shaykh Bahāʼī whose presence in visual media is not confined to portraiture but manifests itself in as many as three distinct spheres.
