Abstract

New data on the localisation of Völgység from the beginning of the 18th century: This paper is built upon four archivál documents, which had been written before Völgység became a district (1709,1723,1723) and afterwards (1767), and which contained Völgység as a name for a geographical area. The name in all the four relevant documents refers to the areas along the Völgység Stream that belong to Baranya County. The documents raise the issue as to which areas the geographical name Völgység re- ferred to in the 18th century, the Turkish era or the late medieval period (if it existed at all at that time). This issue needs to be addressed by reinterpreting some historical sources that were examined before (József Holub, Zoltán Várady). The presentation discusses the concepts proposed before for delimiting the region (Imre Solymár, Zoltán Szőts, geographer László Kádár, linguists Lajos Kiss and László Hadrovics) as well as some other processes and analogies for becoming a “region” in other areas of the Carpathian Basin. In this paper I argue that Völgység might have meant the cluster of towns and villages along the northern foots of the Eastern Mecsek Hills, or a smaller part of it that today belongs to Baranya County, which may have become the name of a newly organised district through name transfer and name extension.
