Abstract

The manuscript, as yet unprocessed elench of Pavel Esterházy from the period around r. 1700 (Verzeichnis aller Bildstöcke, Säulen und Altäre, die Fürst Paul Esterházy in seinen Herrschaften gestiftet hat) has been preserved in the princely Esterházy archive. According to it, he built 73 altars dedicated to Mary and various saints in churches and chapels on his property, as well as 24 holy pillars in open spaces. In addition to them, three calvaries, still standing today, owe its origin. He proved a similar helpfulness in the literary field: since 1690, many of his religious- prayer works were published in Vienna and Trnava. They put in the foreground the cult of the Virgin Mary. It is worth mentioning his foundations and works focusing on religious education and rewarding youth in Trnava and Sopron. The whole life and work of Pavel Esterházy was penetrated by the ecclesiastical patronage: in the sign of strengthening the Catholic Church, he took part in the renewal of the system of Western Hungarian Catholic institutions, the network of churches and monasteries and the cult of Mary and the saints. His ecclesiastical-cultural patronage was an effective tool in his representation and made him unique among the aristocrats ofthat time.
