Abstract

A közlemény Robert Dodsley 18. századi kiadványainak magyarországi, hat nagyobb és egy kisebb budapesti könyvtárban őrzött példányaira vonatkozó adatokat tartalmaz. A példányok adatainak egybegyűjtése révén sikerült kimutatni, hogy az igen kiterjedt szerzői, sajtó alá rendezői, könyvkiadói életműből eredeti nyelven csupán egy kiadvány érhető el a vizsgált gyűjteményekben. Az Oeconomy-kiadások fennmaradt példányai közül a kézírásos bejegyzések alapján többet is konkrét tulajdonoshoz tudunk kötni, s kimutatható 18–19. századi használatuk. A részben egyházi, részben világi possessorok közül kiemelendő Sófalvi József, aki bizonyosan az első alkalommal a jelen kutatás keretében vizsgált példány alapján készítette el saját Oeconomy-fordítását. Kiderült továbbá, hogy e munka mellett csak két másik Dodsley-kiadvány német fordításainak néhány példánya jutott el hazánkba. Ezek közül az egyik, a Chronicle egy történeti tárgyú ismeretterjesztő könyv, melynek témája az angol királyok története Hódító Vilmostól II. Györgyig (1740). A másik, magyar olvasókhoz is eljutott kiadvány Dodsley egyik legnagyobb hatású vállalkozása, a több tudományágra vonatkozó alapismereteket tartalmazó, The Preceptor (1748) című tankönyv német fordítása. Az alábbiakban időrendi sorrendben elsőként e munka, majd az Oeconomy-fordítások példányaira vonatkozó fontosabb adatokat közlöm. | This study explores the reception and dissemination of Robert Dodsley’s works in 18th-century Hungary, focusing primarily on two influential publications: The Preceptor (1748) and The Oeconomy of Human Life (1750). Through the examination of printed and manuscript sources in seven major public collections in Budapest, the paper uncovers the surprising extent and limitations of Dodsley’s Hungarian reach. While The Oeconomy became a moral and philosophical handbook translated into multiple languages – including five different Hungarian versions – The Preceptor, an encyclopedic educational textbook, found its way to Hungary mainly in its German translation, Der Lehrmeister. The study reconstructs the transmission paths of these texts, analyzing ownership marks, library stamps, and handwritten annotations to trace their use, particularly in ecclesiastical and aristocratic libraries. The paper also discusses the historical and didactic significance of these works, their adaptations, and the broader European context in which they were received. Dodsley’s role as a printer and intellectual mediator is highlighted, showing his influence on the Hungarian Enlightenment and educational reforms despite the limited presence of his original English editions. The analysis contributes to the history of cross-cultural literary transmission and underlines the necessity of integrating Dodsley’s oeuvre into the narrative of Hungarian intellectual history.
