Abstract

A főként kérdéseket felvető tanulmányban a nők elnyomott társadalmi helyzetét kommunikációs szempontból értelmező muted group theory elméletét használjuk. | The aim of this study is to investigate issues related to women’s social status in ethnographic museology that have remained largely unaddressed. We do so by examining an artefact from the Museum of Ethnography’s collection — a wooden chest — alongside the informant’s interpretation of it. In this study, which primarily aims to raise questions, we employ muted group theory that is used to interpret women’s marginalized social status from a communicative perspective. Drawing on this theory and its critiques, we examine how the debate between monophony and polyphony, as well as the complexities of “feminine” topics and interpretations, have shaped the questions posed by cultural anthropology, history, and ethnography. We apply these interpretive and historical perspectives to the museum’s collections, synthesizing the literature of these disciplines with the questions raised by the ethnographic collection itself.
